Vanessa's Graduation

It has been too long since we've returned to the our alma mater. So hopefully, I will get off my big behind in Autumn of 2011 and take some pictures within university grounds that I've been planning to take since 2009!

Vanessa's Graduation

Two or so weeks back, we headed to Melbourne Uni to celebrate Vanessa's graduation - congrats girl! Walking around South Lawn, Union House, etc. reminded me of rushing between classes, ice-coffee and sushi @ Plush and long, long nights at the computer lab. After taking some pictures with friends at uni, it was off to Campos Coffee (Elgin St, Carlton) for something cool. We then parted ways. Joe and Van already had dinner plans so we made plans to catch up after dinner for celebratory drinks.

Vanessa's Graduation Wines

2005 Domaine de la Vougeraie Vougeot 1er Cru Les Cras
This was an auction purchase so provenance may be suspect. Big, bold and muscular. Blackberry and blueberries. Not unlike a shiraz and you certainly would not pick it as a pinot from the get go. A tadpole wine. Starts of all gung-ho but the finish is non-existent. It did improve the next day but this is further proof that I am not a fan of 2005 Burgundies.

2004 Dominique Laurent Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes
The nose is herbaceous in a chinese medicinal herb shop kind of way but the palate was balanced and well-poised. This was most delicious. Thanks Joe.

2007 Müller-Catoir Breumel in den Mauern Riesling Auslese 2007
Müller-Catoir usually makes a Großes Gewächs dry riesling from this vineyard. 2007 saw the first release of a sweet wine bottling from this walled Breumel vineyard. I usually enjoy my German rieslings at the Kabinett level, Spatlese at most. While this wine is classed as an Auslese, it tastes more like a Beerenauslese which means it is in the intensely sweet spectrum. BUT, I intend to make an exception for this wine. I think this wine is jaw-droppingly, bang your fists on the table awesome. It is rich and intense and yet is has so much acid that it never comes across as cloying. Super complex gear. Don't drink this wine, just sip it slowly. This will easily go 25+ years.

Lobster. Crab. Crap!

Adriana

Lobster is my answer to everything. What do you want for your birthday? Lobster! What do you want to eat? Lobster! Who should run for PM? Lobster! How do you stop climate change? Lobster! Who's fault is it? Lobster! You get the drift...

AK: What are we having for brunch?
Aa: Last night's leftovers.
AK: Oh, okay.
Aa: Why, what do you want to eat?
AK: Lobster.

<the missus gets really excited>

Aa: Yeah, let's go to Pacific House! We can order lobster or crab with egg noodles cooked in spring onion and ginger! Yes, let's do that. Just the two of us. We don't have to share!
AK: Tham chiak kui! (Greedy Monster)
Aa: Yes, I'm a tham chiak kui. So are we going?
AK: *grunts*
Aa: Lobster?
AK: No!
Aa: Crab?
AK: No!
Aa: CRAP!

Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett 2008

This Donnhoff kabinett sits comfortably in the off-dry category. It is made using riesling grapes from the Oberhäuser Leistenberg vineyard in the Nahe region.

At the mid-30s price point, this Dönnhoff kabinett is a no-brainer. In my opinion, it stands head and shoulders above offerings from Dr. Loosen and Max ferd. Richter.

Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett 2008

It is a pale straw colour with a tinge of green. A gorgeous smelling wine - pure citrus fruits, elderflower and kaffir lime leaves. The palate kicks off to a juicy medley of fruit - grapefruit, guava, mango and lime - which gives way to bath salts, slate and minerals. It is refreshing, has good complexity and a good acid backbone. Great intensity but light on its feet with a long, persistent finish. Excellent. I'd happily drink this anyday of the week.
